U.s. Army Marks 247th Birthday June 14 > Joint Base San Antonio > News

In honor of the US Army's birthday, we explore its history. Read on to learn how and when the army was formed and how it has evolved since then. Happy Birthday to the US Army!

Two months after shots were fired around the world and the militiamen of the four New England colonies began open rebellion against Britain, a group led by Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen captured the British forts at Ticonderoga and Crown Point in New York.

The Continental Congress eventually agreed that a full-scale struggle for independence was inevitable. However, the colonial "army" was more of a guerrilla group of local men fighting for their faith than an official military force. Congress believed they needed additional support.

It was decided that the remaining nine colonies would join the fight for independence from the British Empire. On June 14, 1775, George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the United Colonies, known as the Continental Army.

At that time, on June 14, the army as we know it today was far from formed

The US Army's official birthday remains a date also celebrated as a US military birthday.

The Continental Army consisted of troops from all thirteen colonies but was formed quickly and in response to a crisis. At that time there was no real structure or widespread organization. They fought with courage and passion and, of course, eventually defeated their British enemies, but the Continental Army left a lot to be desired.

After the US victory and the official end of the Revolutionary War, the army was disbanded and regular irregular troops became the norm. However, it soon became clear that America needed a trained, standing army to maintain the independence it had fought so hard to secure. In 1780 the War Office was established and four years later the first full regiment of regular army infantry was raised.

When the army was formed they had no official support from the government. Eventually, several departments were created to support their work. The four corps today become the Adjutant General's Corps, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Treasury Corps, and the Quartermaster Corps.

Although our nation's first president was also the commander-in-chief of our nation's first military, he did not simultaneously hold those two roles, and subsequent presidents did not command the military.

It was not until the ratification of the Constitution in 1787 that the President of the United States was officially appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy. Later, in 1802, the Military Academy was established at West Point, and in the early 1900's the Army Reserve was formed.

Although successful, the War of 1812 showed that the army was in need of significant reinforcements. The War Office was then reorganized into a system of offices that acted as advisors to the War Office. Decades later, at the start of the Civil War in 1863, the army as we know it today began to form.

At the beginning of the Civil War, regiments were recruited from localities. The company's employees were elected by the people in the company; Colonels were often local politicians appointed by state governors, while generals were appointed by the president.

At first the army was relatively small. Attempts to recruit members of the All-Volunteer Army were not as successful as originally hoped; Hence, the Registration Act, known as the Civil War Military Draft, was enacted. It wasn't until 90 years later, in 1973, that the Army became an all-volunteer force again, by order of President Nixon.

Today the army does much more than lead in times of war. They engage in cybersecurity, intelligence gathering, covert operations, community building and research to keep American citizens safe and our nation safe.
