The flight characteristics of the Sling provide perfectly coordinated and highly responsive control. This gives it excellent jet fighter characteristics without being overly sensitive.

The performance of the Sling matches and exceeds almost all aircraft in its class, while being very economical and enjoyable to fly. Its aluminum construction provides lightness and structural consistency while offering proven strength and longer life than its composite competitors.

Aircraft For Hire

The wide cabin, excellent all-round visibility and considerable luggage capacity make the Sling a very comfortable yet versatile aircraft.

To reduce costs such as boarding fees and hangar accommodation, and to eliminate the problems of controlled airspace (limited airspace, waiting time and permission to take off or land), most recreational aviation operators are based at regional airports.

Aircraft and pilots are regulated by Recreational Aviation Australia (RA-Aus) on behalf of CASA. Recreational Aviation Australia (RA-Aus) is Australia's largest sport aviation organization and the main Australian governing body for ultralight, recreational and light sport aircraft (LSA). It has over 10,000 members and 3,500 registered aircraft.

For many people, recreational aviation is immediately associated with ultralights. "Ultralight" is a broad term that conjures up images of an airplane with a basic airframe and sail powered by a lawnmower engine. While still affordable and can be a lot of fun to fly, technology has come a long way to include state-of-the-art composite aircraft with highly efficient aerodynamics, engines and avionics.

In the pioneer days, there were unrealistic regulations regarding recreational flights and airplanes. For example, flying above 500 feet was prohibited (offering little chance of recovery in case of engine failure) and the aircraft had only one seat, so there was no second seat for the instructor.

The SportStar is designed and manufactured in the Czech Republic and was the first approved single-purpose light sport aircraft.

Recreational pilot training is similar to training for a Private Pilot License (PPL), but less intensive. You must pass several tests before your first solo flight.

To get an RA-Aus pilot certificate you need to be fit enough to qualify for the vehicle - there is no special, expensive CASA medical.

Aviation Security Identification Cards (ASICs) are only valid if you are flying into an airfield at RPT airports, but most RAAus pilots avoid RPT airports and therefore do not need an ASIC.

Upgrades To Ultralight Aircraft, Actually

Andrew Cotterell, of White Gum Air Park near York, Western Australia, says that a person with no pilot experience requires a minimum of 20-30 hours of flying time, including 5 hours of solo flight, to obtain a recreational aviation certificate, but it depends. on the abilities and anchoring time of the student. All flights must be recorded in the pilot's logbook.

Cotterell advises aspiring pilots to spend about $6,000 to get their pilot's certificate. "Even with an instructor on board during training, you will still enjoy flying the aircraft," he said.

For the student who wants to continue flying, the training will be tailored to your needs. Hours spent at the recreational level can count toward further training such as a private pilot license or commercial pilot license.

Recreational pilot certificates are issued according to the category of aircraft you have trained in, eg 3-axis, weight shift or power parachute.

Then you can move on to tolerances (eg passenger transport, cross country, tail wheel, floats, low level, retractable landing gear, shaping and towing the kite). Your training also includes your radio operator certification. It is a system designed specifically for hobby pilots who want to achieve the standards associated with their requirements. There is no instrument rating or controlled airspace for RA-Aus registered aircraft - as previously mentioned, RA-Aus aircraft must fly VFR during daylight hours and stay out of controlled areas.

The minimum requirement for RA-Aus pilots to stay up-to-date is twice-yearly instructor flight checks, an opportunity to hone their skills. However, it is safer and smarter to always have a check flight with an instructor if it has been a long time since your last flight (cheap insurance).

The Airborne Edge range of two-seater ultralight motorcycles are designed and manufactured in Australia by Airborne Windsport of Redhead, New South Wales.

Cotterell says RAAus pilots generally follow the same air navigation rules and regulations as other aircraft, but there are additional restrictions placed on RA-Aus aircraft and pilots.

RA-Aus aircraft cannot fly into controlled airspace and must remain OCTA [out of controlled area]. They cannot fly below 500 feet and are limited to a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet, which is reduced to 9,500 feet when flying in hemispheric directions. They must be able to glide clear of any built-up area or water and must fly under VFR [Visual Flight Rules] conditions by day.

RA-Aus pilots will have to complete three landings in the last nine months before boarding a passenger. RA-Aus aircraft are limited to one passenger.

Only RA-Aus instructors can accept payment and only for instructional reviews and test flight (TIF). Otherwise you need a commercial pilot license from CASA.

RA-Aus' current fleet of approximately 3,500 aircraft is among the youngest in Australia. Aircraft can range from electric parachutes to variable weight aircraft and light aircraft such as the Vans RV12, Carbon Cub or Cessna 152.

There are a number of requirements for RAAus registration, the main ones being a maximum weight of 600kg or 650kg seaplane, a maximum stall speed of 45 knots and a maximum of two seats on board (four-seat aircraft must have the extra seats removed).

Aircraft are maintained by owners who hold a Level 1 Maintenance Permit or higher qualification. No LAME maintenance required. All aircraft must have a certificate of airworthiness issued by an engineer who must be registered with RA-Aus.

You can even build your own from blueprints or a kit. Some general aviation aircraft (such as the Cessna 152) may also be registered on the RA-Aus registry. In other words, there are airplanes that fit your budget and you get what you pay for.

Running costs are probably lower than the average car. Most RA-Aus aircraft use premium unleaded fuel (95 octane or higher) which can be purchased at your local service station.
